Conference Summary

The Partnering in Workplace Violence Prevention: Translating Research to Practice conference is the first time The National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) convened a conference on the topic of workplace violence prevention. The conference was held at the Wyndham-Baltimore Inner Harbor Hotel on the afternoon of Monday, November 15 through noon on Wednesday, November 17, 2004. Audiences were diverse groups of business/labor leaders, researchers, professional associations, policy makers/legislators, and victim's rights advocates who bring significant knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to the discussions.

The opening afternoon included state-of-the art presentations from researchers and practitioners, providing the framework for the remainder of the conference. The organizing principle for breakout sessions were based on the typology of workplace violence that has evolved over the last decade. The topic was divided into four categories:

  • Criminal Intent (Type I)
  • Customer/Client (Type II)
  • Worker-on-Worker (Type III)
  • Personal Relationship (Type IV)

Concurrent breakout sessions for each type of workplace violence began with panel presentations and discussions which included researchers, practitioners, and survivors.

Facilitated small group discussions addressed key issues and questions moving toward best practices in workplace violence prevention.

The goals of the conference included:

1. identifying successful workplace violence prevention strategies;
2. identifying the barriers and challenges to implementation of workplace violence prevention efforts and strategies for overcoming them;
3. identifying major research and information dissemination gaps that must be addressed to advance workplace violence prevention;
4. the roles of the various groups, agencies, and organizations in making significant progress in workplace violence prevention over the next decade.

These are to be captured in a NIOSH document addressing workplace violence prevention strategies and research needs.
