CAEPV Member of the Month - Verizon Wireless
Congratulations to Verizon Wireless -- CAEPV's May 2008 "Member of the Month." Verizon Wireless has a long history of working to prevent domestic violence both within the workplace and in the communities where it does business.
Verizon Wireless' focus on preventing domestic violence and raising awareness of the issues began in 1995 with the introduction of its HopeLine® phone recycling program. The program began when the company donated voicemail boxes to local shelters and has grown into a multifaceted program that includes a successful phone recycling and re-use effort, financial support for local and national domestic violence organizations, community and corporate awareness programs, and partnerships with law enforcement agencies, professional sports teams, educational institutions and corporations nationwide.
By 2007, Verizon Wireless had collected more than 4.5 million phones through the HopeLine program and donated nearly $5 million in cash grants to organizations engaged in raising the awareness of domestic violence and in its prevention, and put more than 60,000 wireless phones with service in the hands of local agencies and their clients.
Verizon Wireless added the #HOPE feature in October 2002. By dialing #HOPE from any Verizon Wireless phone, victims of domestic violence are able to access professional support quickly and confidentially. The toll- and airtime-free call is routed to the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-SAFE).
Verizon Wireless also has policies and programs within its workplace to protect and support its more than 69,000 employees. Domestic violence is covered in the company’s Code of Business Conduct—which every employee must read and sign each year.
In 2007, Verizon Wireless was the first company to implement the new SafeWork Certified Trainer program created by CAEPV Member Safe Horizon in partnership with the Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence. In 2008, CEO Lowell McAdam signed on to SafeWork 2010 – further showing Verizon Wireless’ commitment to doing all it can to address domestic violence as a workplace issue.
Verizon Wireless was the lead sponsor of CAEPV’s National Benchmark Telephone Survey – the first-ever survey of adults across the United States to discover what how the general employee population has been impacted by domestic violence as a workplace issue. In addition, through the Verizon Foundation, Verizon Wireless is a generous supporter of CAEPV’s award-winning website for girls, GirlsAllowed as well as the sponsor of CAEPV’s recently redesigned website.
And finally, we are very thankful to have Debra Lewis, manager of Public Affairs and Corporate Communications at Verizon Wireless, as a member of our CAEPV Board of Directors and Carolyn Schamberger, Public Affairs manager of Verizon Wireless' Illinois Wisconsine Region as a member of our National Advisory Board.
We are proud to have such an involved and dedicated company as a member of CAEPV!
